On February 26th at 7pm, The Learning Channel will be showing My Life as a Child, a documentary film about children’s lives. In this series, children will be shown dealing with blended families and same-sex parents. The children themselves filmed their experiences on digital video.
“In February 2006, TLC asked children ages 7-12 to submit videos about their lives,” the press release says. “Over 400 children responded, and 20 were selected for the series. Each child was producer, cameraperson and director of his or her segment, taping him or herself for approximately four months each and capturing footage that ultimately formed the six-episode series.” Each show features kids giving their opinion on their parents, friends and the growing up process in general. The series explores issues such as playing sports, doing well in school, fighting with parents, and dealing with bullies. "First-person filmmaking by these children gives this series an intimacy unequaled on television," David Abraham, executive vice president and general manager of TLC said in a press release. "Furthermore, their perspectives on today's most pressing issues, including race, poverty, bullying and more are deeply insightful and far beyond their years. We are thankful to them for opening up their lives to us in such a powerful, raw and real way." Some of the children featured include an 8-year-old who published a book; a child with cerebal palsy who is studying karate; a female linebacker; a child living without a father in a rough part of Baltimore and an African-American girl adopted by a Caucasian woman. TLC says that a show like this is only able to be made now because technology has become so advanced. “Just 10 years ago, a series like this wouldn't have been possible, but the digital video revolution has inspired a new era in first-person documentary filmmaking and the YouTube phenomenon, among others,” according to the press release. The children who participated in the series will be talking about the show online at TLC.com . They will be giving kids ideas on how to create their own storytelling videos. Until next time! |
