The Nashville-based chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), a national non-profit organization, announced it will begin collecting books, magazines, videos, and DVDs with GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) subject matter, and will redistribute these media across the United States, as well as internationally. The recycled merchandise will primarily be sold online, with proceeds going to Nashville PFLAG.
PFLAG board member, Rachel Stanton, sited the reason for the project as being twofold. She stated, "PFLAG Nashville wants to reach GLBT supportive friends, family, and members of the community wherever they are. Countless U.S. and worldwide areas do not have adequate access to GLBT resources, and PFLAG wants to help fill that gap. PFLAG wants to encourage the gay community to recycle these materials, because keeping information moving is always a good thing, especially considering the lack of availablity of these materials at many public libraries across the globe. The GLBT community now has a place to donate their books and magazines, and to be assured it will go to help others support diversity and better handle issues related to this diverse community." H.G. Stovall, Co-Chair Person for PFLAG Nashville relates: "I believe this is an exciting time. Everyone wins as those of us with previously enjoyed materials clean off our bookshelves we are helping others obtain more information and help in an economical way while also financially supporting a very worthy organization."
