If you are like me, you are constantly looking for a new hang out spot where the atmosphere has more to do about socialization and less to do about social diseases. Every once in a while even the most trendy of men and women need to escape from the loud pounding of mind numbing house music and twenty minute lines to the bathroom to a place where they can sit back grab a few beers with friends and watch a game on TV. Where do you find such a place you ask? Well here is a rundown of some of the best sports bars in a city near you. And yes they serve martinis!
The CREW in Chicago is a great place to sit back with the guys, or girls whatever the case may be, and have that college sports bar experience. It’s located in the heart of Uptown, and this state of the art sports-themed gay bar and grill boasts great beer, tasty food and a friendly staff. If you are looking for a game, they’ve got you covered with their 92-inch screen, multiple monitors, satellite, and HDTV. You’ll always find the game you want. They serve a full menu until 10 and a bar menu until they close the doors at 2. www.worldsgreatestbar.com/index.htm If you find yourself in the Big Apple and you need to take a break from the Go-Go dancers and crazy nightclubs, stop into the aptly titled GYM for an escape from the scene. The bar is located in Chelsea and is a beautiful space that could easily be described as a lounge because of the outdoor patios, mahogany bar and the working fireplace. The two level establishment offers wide screen televisions, pool tables, dartboards, and even a foosball table with a traditional bar menu. It has all the comforts of your local college town bar. www.gymsportsbar.com The Midwestern states are known for their corn-fed boys and their love of games and if you are trapped in Denver for a night or two you may want to check out Jr’s. This two-floor establishment is more of a hybrid mixing weekend beer busts with drag shows and go-go boys for the less athletically interested patron. Jr’s has a lounge type atmosphere with video DJ’s mixing music between games. At night as the club kids slowly take off for dance clubs, the bar quiets down and becomes a casual cocktail hangout. www.myjrs.com For all you Georgia peaches who can’t live without watching the Braves or the Falcons, you will be happy to know that there is a sexy place where you can go and catch up with friends while tuning into your favorite game. Woof’s is located in an unassuming shopping center near the heart of boy’s town in Atlanta and boasts being the only gay sports bar in the city. Of all of the sports bars that I have been to this one is the most authentic with husky bartenders keeping the beer flowing and with all the game talk you will really feel like you are in a college fraternity. The bar holds trivia nights and Vegas style black jack competitions, which really lend to the authentic personality. www.woofsatlanta.com All you "Bean Town" travelers who are looking for that place where everyone knows your name and Cheers is just too straight you should check out Fritz. Fritz is located in the heart of the South End, which makes it convenient to many shops, restaurants and several other bars in the area. With it’s many televisions and laid back atmosphere, it is the perfect spot to take a load off from a crazy shopping day to have a beer and watch sports with friends. The bar also offers one of the longest running and most popular weekend brunches in the area. www.fritzboston.com If you will notice from the list there is one major city conspicuously missing. Living in Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, with West Hollywood being the highest population of gay residents per capita, one would assume that there would definitely be a hangout for everyone to enjoy. I have been a patron at all of the other bars on my travels, but unfortunately LA is devoid of a self-proclaimed gay sports bar. While preparing for this article, I did research trying to come across something that I may have missed, but I just couldn’t seem to find a sports bar that catered to the gay population. So for all of you sports enthusiast who are looking for that next untapped market, the trendy city of Los Angles could definitely use some diversity. Until next time! |
