Yep! You heard us correctly! Hip Hop record labels are sending a very disappointing message: Some Hip Hop labels don't want their music to be associated with the gay tv! MTV's GLBT channel, known as LOGO {channel 179 on Cablevision,} is having problems getting music rights for some of its programming. According to director Patrick Ian-Polk, of "Noah's Arc," clearance for some of Kanye West's music "got flat out rejected by the label." Kanye West is signed to Def Jam Records.
Considering that LOGO is an MTV product, and artists of all genres, INCLUDING Hip Hop, have profitted from MTV support, I consider this lack of cooperation a sign of disrespect. The television series contains plenty of other popular music for its show. However, it's main theme is to represent young gay African Americans, so it seems only logical to be able to include Hip Hop music in its episodes. It's okay for Hip Hop artists to associate with criminal activity and ghetto fabulous lifestyles. It's even become acceptable to live the pimp fantasy, ho-ify women, and use recreational drugs. But a big red stop sign flashes for LOGO programming? Oh c'mon. Are you serious? As if there are no GLBT in the Hip Hop industry? YEAH.... RIGHT. Millions of GLBT listen to Hip Hop. Many spend their own money on cds, concert tickets, ringtones, and other Hip Hop related items. Many GLBT clubs & bars spin Hip Hop as part of their weekly sets, and the crowds sing along to every word. I guess Hip Hop doesn't mind getting their hands on our money that way. This story isn't over folks! We'll research this for the specifics. Although Kanye West's music was denied clearance, we CANNOT confirm if this denial is consistent view with the artist himself. Right now, we are focusing on the record labels. So Kanye, you are okay with us AT THE MOMENT. We've got a message of our own to these Hip Hop labels: Don't bite the hand that feeds you. You WILL go back to being starved again.
Until next time! |
