Winter’s over and it’s not only time to put away the sweaters (thankfully) but all those depressing dirges, too. If you ask me, one of the best things about summer is all the great dance music that seems to come out of the woodwork.
The following songs have been getting ample play on my iPod over the past few weeks, and I’m sure I’ll be listening to them for the rest of the summer, too—along with whatever other hot singles come out in the meantime, of course. “Feelin’ Me (Digital Dog Club Mix),” Therese—I can’t imagine many Americans have heard of Therese, a blond bombshell from Sweden who has had a slew of dance hits in her home country and throughout Europe. Hopefully her latest single—a simple and infectious club-ready track featuring lyrics like, Baby, are ya feelin’ me/Come and rock with me/Crazy rhythm inside of me—will make it’s way across the pond soon. If not, just remember that Google is your friend. “Electric,” Lisa Scott-Lee—Another slice of electro-pop heaven that has yet to make it to our shores, unfortunately. Scott-Lee is a former member of the UK super group, Steps, who has since made a name for herself by releasing scrumptious dance ditties like this one, which sounds like something Kylie’s sister Dannii wishes she had in her catalog. Really, you can’t go wrong with lyrics like, Duracell’s got nothing on me/You know you’re turning me on/And I’m ready to blow. “With Love,” Hilary Duff—Say what you want about Hilary, but it’s hard to deny the infectious contents of her latest album, Dignity. “With Love,” the LP’s first single, is deliciously retro, with crunchy ‘80s guitar riffs and robotic beeps and blips coursing through the background. Hopefully all of this means Ms. Duff has finally said “sayonara” to her Disney Channel roots. “Me & My Imagination,” Sophie Ellis-Bextor—Why has this British disco bunny gone unnoticed in the U.S.? I have no idea, but if this track—from her just-released-in-Europe album, Trip the Light Fantastic—is any indication, she won’t be an unknown much longer. Track down this tune whether it’s released here or not—you won’t be disappointed. Swirling synths and soaring vocals combine to create a song you won’t be able to get out of your head. “In My Arms,” Kylie—A slew of songs supposedly intended for Kylie’s next album debuted (leaked) on the Internet recently, with this gritty (well, as gritty as Kylie can get) little ditty being the cream of the crop. It covers all the requisite territory of a Kylie track—it’s retro, synthy, uptempo and features the pop princess cooing about a lover who’s seemingly enjoying the comfort of her embrace (and how could he not?). “Daybreak,” Janet Jackson—Hardly a new song from the most normal member of the Jackson clan (I know, that’s not saying much), but considering the album from which it’s culled (the sex-drenched 20 Y.O.) was a bit of a bomb, it’s doubtful many have heard it. That’s too bad, because this one deserves a few spins. It certainly has “summer hit” written all over it, with a shimmering merry-go-round backdrop and Ms. Jackson giddily singing about “sneaking out to play” with some stud she wants to snog before the break of dawn. “Automatic,” Ultra Nate—How do you improve upon this Pointer Sisters classic? Apparently by giving it a clubtastic update and handing the mike to Ultra Nate. Adding in a line from another Pointer Sisters hit, “I’m So Excited,” doesn’t hurt. “I Could Fall in Love with You,” Erasure—Where have these guys been? Apparently they were holed up Portland, Maine, writing wonderful songs like this one (for new album, Light at the End of the World). Definitely a return to form for the British duo, with vocalist Andy Bell sounding like a kid again. “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song),” Enrique Iglesias—I avoided this song when it came out because the title made me think about that unforgettable scene in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Is that the kind of “ping pong” Enrique is singing about? Thankfully, no—the “ping pong” in the title just refers to a sound effect in the background. Other than that this is a breezy summer song about—you guessed it—falling in love. “Lollipop,” Mika—Take one part Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears and one part Jackson 5 and this what you’ll come up with. “Lollipop” may not top this fey star’s first hit, “Grace Kelly,” but then again, that song didn't feature lyrics like, Suckin' too hard on your lollipop/Oh, love's gonna get you down. Until next time! |
