We are a dramatic lot. It’s part of our nature to be somewhat over-the-top. The gays have always possessed a flare for the theatrical. Heck they don’t say Drama Queen for nothing. But why do we feel the need to court unnecessary drama in our lives just for the sake of it? There are enough problems in the world already; we hardly need to invite more into our lives.
Maybe it’s because we didn’t get enough attention as kids. Maybe we are so ravenously insecure that we must have attention all the time whether it is good or bad. Maybe we’re just so self-involved we think everyone in the world should care about and be involved in our business. Whatever the reason, we homos have earned our reputation for being dramatic.
There is nothing wrong with being expressive and vibrant. Drama, though, that we create because we’re bored or dissatisfied actually disrupts our lives. We get so caught up in the blaze of the moment that we don’t really deal with the situation at hand. It becomes about the show and not about the problem. You can’t solve your problems if you are focusing on the production of it. Theatricality is okay. We definitely do it well. Sequins, feathers, rhinestones- all great for the stage, but when the drama follows you home at night and starts to take over you life it gets to be a bit much. I’m not saying to stifle your exuberance, just know that there is a time and a place for things. If everything is drama, drama, drama about you 24-7 it becomes exhausting. It’s like the boy who cried wolf. If everything that happens to you is always the biggest or the worst or the craziest, when something really huge does happen it gets relegated to the same level as all the other mundane drama you’ve created before it. What’s exciting about a story – and a life, for that matter- is finding all the shadings and variations of color. All the nuances and subtle turns are what make something interesting and well rounded. Explosive moments are exciting once in a while, but too much of it and it just becomes monotonous. Save the drama for situations that really deserve it. Until next time!
