Americans spend less money on Dads on Father’s Day (June 17) than they do on mothers on Mother’s Day, a new survey has found. Eighty-six percent of people give Mom more expensive gifts than Dad. Even more surprising: Other research finds that 49 percent of Americans won’t even be acknowledging it is Father’s Day.
The survey also asked respondents if they planned on purchasing a gift that they would be able to share with their father Twenty-five percent said yes, and seventy-five percent said no. In addition, the survey looked at Dad’s most preferred pastimes, and found that Dads enjoy watching TV the most, even more than doing outdoor activities, working on the house, working on the car, or reading. The reason fathers may like TV so much may have to do with the fact that 75 percent of them hang onto the remote control. Tivo, the company behind the survey, wants to encourage this trend. "While our research is a bit tongue-in-cheek, one point remains clear; TiVo 'gets' dads better than any other gift can, giving them even more control of something we know they love, their TV," said Katie Ho, vice president of TiVo’s marketing, in a press release. Tivo, says Ho, lets Dads mix the best of Web with television. "Not only can he enjoy his favorite shows whenever he wants them, he can now download movies from thousands of choices on www.Amazon.com and have them sent directly to the TV. He can also demonstrate that father really does know best, figuring out all the TV and movies worth watching with TiVo's new Universal Swivel Search feature, which finds shows from both broadband and broadcast sources by 'swiveling' on actors, topics and other common ways viewers think about TV." To encourage Americans to spend more money on Dads this Father’s Day, TiVo is giving $200 off to anybody who buys a TiVo Series3™ HD box prior to Father's Day. The study was done the final week of May 2007, and had a margin of error of +/-3%. Tivo Inc. was founded a decade ago, and is responsible for making the first digital video recorder (DVR) available on the commercial market.
